First fluctuation observed after recent Google spam update

I've been working in gambling niche and my target keywords are dominated by repurposed expired domains.
Today, I found that two of them which ranked on top disappear. One seems penalized (not shown anywhere) and the other goes down to second page.
Still, there are plenty of them remain their power. But it seems like effect of the recent update obviously.

They might have very powerful backlinks that are keeping them afloat

Yes, Recent Google algorithms are affecting most of the sites which have built backlinks from non relevant niche sites or sites with Low quality content maybe the sites you have mentioned might be affected by these.
