I find that. I don't exacly want my suppliers and customers to connect to each other. But Linkedin has some weird annoying feature that says "do you know...." Strangely, I'm in a position where my closest contacts and me DONT want to connect. Yet I AM connecting with more random users.

Its the constant battle between social media website owners and their users - each with their own aims and aversions.
 
Congratulations on joining linkedin. Concentrating on joining groups and getting yourself well known would be a good place to start now that you are a part of linkedin. Good luck!
 
I joined not that long ago as well. Still trying to figure this out, but it looks like it can really be a good social tool for me to use.
 
Wise move to join linkedin, definitely will not be disappointed. Take a look around, familiarise yourself with the place and join groups that interest you so you can start interacting and take it from there. Will be a slow process if you are new but you will get there.
 
I see people still congratulate you for your firs day of Linkedin ....5 months after it happened. I guess the better reaction would be : How is it, did you mange to crack this platform and make it work for you?
