Finding keyword ideas

Greetings from my parents' basement!

So I pretty much got the basics down of keyword research, and putting it all to use, but I have yet to find a way to effectively come up with keyword (I'd say niche but the over-used word pisses me off now) ideas.

As an example; I know that "buy red car that smells like lady gagas armpit" is way easier to rank for than "buy red car" at the cost of profitability, and as long as it has a market value and not too much competition that's a-okay.

Now there are of course loads of programs that can do most of the work for you, but in order to put them to work, you first need to come up with "buy red car", or maybe even just "red car".

Now sure, I could go sit in that dark corner over there pondering what could possibly be a market area that still has some long-tail keyword available worth ranking for, but I doubt that's a very effective method.

So what's a method to find market areas worth looking into? Stuff like amazon and ebay (which are tips I found through g00wgle) are kind of worthless since they all got stuff like "laptops" and "used cars" and whatnot, all markets that are no-go for beginners with limited funds.

If I'm understanding what you are attempting to do here is find keyword methods.

Basic and simple:

$ Start with your ' product ' or ' service ' first. Know what you are going to get into, then, move on to the next step.

$ Search for keywords related to the product or service you have chosen. Looking for keywords based on traffic before you even know what keywords you are looking for will serve you nothing more than wasted time, energy and effort.

$ Build a list of the related keywords you find, then streamline them into a short set of the top 5-10 and start split testing your product/service offer with them to see if the traffic in those keyword niches are interested in what you are offering.

It is a simple formula that works. Save yourself the time and do it right, rather than just guessing and chasing traffic.

It is like fishing...you know the fish are in the pond, ( the market ), and know there are 3-7 different types of fish, ( keyword targeted search traffic ), in there. You have to go to where they are and test out different bait choices, ( products/services ), to see what they are attracted to the most.

That's the one I'm having trouble with. Where would you find products/services etc. to start marketing for? I don't have my own, so I'd have to affiliate.

Like, if I were to go to amazon to see what they're selling and hopefully get some ideas, I'd get stuff like "laptops" and "kindles" which would then fork into long tail keywords such as "cheap laptops" or "cheap black laptops", all things I cannot work with as a beginner with low funds.

And it doesn't necissaraly have to be a product/service. As an example, home-based webshop owners could be desperately looking for info on how to reduce their shipping costs, and I could create a mini-blog with such information and just make money off ads. But in order to find that market, I would first have to come up with "webshops".

So to put it short; is there any golden rule / known method to find market areas to make money off ?
