Finding CS Work Online

In the past year, I had a day job which required learning all kinds of programming, web/app development, etc. I now have skills (and talent) to work on projects independently. As an American, I find it difficult to compete with the price of web development work online on websites such as upWork or Freelancer despite cultural and language barriers.

Besides for obvious offline work (calling a company and offering them application development) or working for a firm, what are some ways I can stand out?

These are just examples, working with anyone internationally has it's ups and downs. If you are really a good programmer you will stand out. I am a programmer myself and I get people to beg me to work for 100$/hour overnight projects because some indian fucked up their website.

Dude just the fact you are american is an advertisement by itself. 90% of indians are scambugs. They make dirty ugly code, they have no formal training, I never work with them. They are terrible at business and you have to have a lot of patience to deal with them, let alone the constant spam or harassment and unwanted facebook friend requests from a job advertisement you posted 4 months ago. As someone that hires people I avoid working with them. The next group that might threaten you are Ukrainian/Slavic people, but most of them have caught on the US rates and charge similar to what most developers would charge (15-30$/hour range) they might have more experience that you will have to compete with but also their english is terrible, but they are generally really good programmers.

Thank you so much for this answer. This has definitely given me some perspective. I also went to school for this stuff; the problem is, I don't know where to find clients, and I have a full time job - so transitioning to remote work is the hard part (unstable)

I understand C, Python, Javascript (ES7), TypeScript, NodeJS, ExpressJS, Angular 4, and a few others.

I've written scrapers, bots, and other automation tools.

I'm a fast learner and it doesn't matter what languages I understand, but knowing which language to use for certain problems.

A lot of these projects I worked on was non-disclosure, however I attached my current WIP (URL available upon request)
