I've been reading a lot but I am new to this and haven't come across this tool yet. Is there a tool out there that I could put in a URL and it would find the top 5 or so keywords that the page ranks for? Free would be best for sure.

Semrush.com does this... To a point.
Services like that scrape search engine results, so they can only show keywords in their database which is only ever going to be a partial view.

There are other tools like keywordspy aimed more at ppc, to help reverse engineer ppc campaighs.

For seo its better to look at what they are trying to rank on from their links and onsite seo.

You may use ‘Keyword Country' for this analysis... Along with keyword, it will highlight the amount of traffic that a page is getting from keywords.

use this toolbar in FireFox and click on the Rank Checker on the far right. Works very well and easy to use.

All good answers. Thanks. I also downloaded Traffic Travis and can tell by anchor text in backlinks what the page will rank for. Most of these sites have have 1-3 keywords that are very common for their backlink anchor text. Is it safe to assume these sites are doing some blackhat backlinking?

Try to use semrush. The main advantage of semrush is being able to type in a site URL and instantly see a list of their top keywords, both organic and paid, and also with some meaningful metrics .

Take the URL of the website and put it into Google Keyword tool so that Google can give you some keyword ideas. Take those keywords and put them in any rank tracker tool to find whether a URL/Site ranks for that keyword.

I did the same yesterday for a site and was able to find bunch of keywords.
