I started on Upwork as a German/English/Slovenian translator. As a newbie without any reviews it was hard for me to get my first project. At the time I was living in Central America and one day I got an idea. I started to look for projects at the right time of the day. So basically I was looking for jobs when most of the competitors were sleeping and since I was in a different timezone, it was easy for me. This is how I got my first project and my first 5 star review. Of course, you have to include "I am new on Upwork..." in your proposal. I hope this will help a bit.

Congratulations. What do you do on Upwork? I started my Upwork journey this year with a goal to make $150,000 by end of December. A lot of people complain that Upwork is being a bad boy for charging 20% fees from the freelancers. But it is still the best freelance platforms out there and a gold mine of opportunities. Most Upwork clients end up doing business with you outside the platform after a few months from their first project with you.
