So after months of success with many sites using very easy to implement methods (mostly article directories) the gravy train has ended. Like so many others here my old sites have been demoted and im finding it impossible to rank new sites with any kind of mass link building.

For this reason i'm looking into using new, more white hat techniques. my new idea for ranking sites is to create either wordpress or tumblr blogs for a particular keyword phrase i want to rank for. Optimizing on site as much as possible and then building only quality, high pr links manually. Maybe between 30-50 links. What do you guys think of this approach?

Also has anyone else had success using a similar approach?

Blackhat is still alive and going strong what you're seeing is Blackhat and Grayhat SEO taking a beating. Many Blackhat methods are not even SEO related. SEO in general is taking a beating but you just need to change with the times. New methods will start to surface as people figure out ways to game the system. Right now it's too early to tell if your approach will be worthwhile but many are saying that they're seeing poorly optimized web 2.0 properties ranking well.

I would avoid using wordpress.com sites. They will boot you if you're using affiliate links. At least that's been my experience.

New "rules" means new opportunities to exploit. The worst thing that could happen to BH is if the rules never changed because then BH would be WH and the opportunities would be more limited.

So...

Blackhat doesn't work because you could only afford AMR and you're too lazy to learn anything else..

You get an 'F' failure and a 'F' for being lazy.

What do I think of your approach? You're lazy. Try other blackhat methods.

Why even SEO at all anymore?
Unless you have had a huge amount of success since you started, just pack your bags... Only the strong and diligent will continue to make bank.

Sitting around making manual web 2.0s won't cut it.

I heard SEO doesn't even exist!

Matt Cutts told me.

Actually, MC just made it easier than ever to succeed in BH... at least for now... if this update remains in its current form, you will see a lot of heavy black hat techniques being employed... boosting a lot of thin sites.

It's might be a bit early to tell, but I see a lot of web2 back in search results. Although it's possible that it's not because they rank now, but because of much empty space in search result.

All the time (99%) before this year search results were changing because some sites outrank others, now results changing drastically because too many sites were simply taken down

exactly right

In IM we know that if it is truly black hat then enjoy the money while it lasts cause it could be gone tomorrow. Black hat is alive and kicking but you need to understand that this business is dynamic and not static...you have to be constantly changing your game to keep banking...don't give up on black hat techniques

To stay in the game, to fool the game, always invent new tricks, so when its figured out, you already one step further, playing another field, winning another war.

G win. They f**k up the lazy ones...and a lot of them are now writing that they stop with BH SEO...so..g win! now it will be more stronger...but BH seo will never die, it's like a cat-and-mouse game..they change the rules and we find a new way and sometime the opposite happen!

This is SEO.. It's a consistently always changing. If you do not like it, this is not the right industry for you.

Like others have mentioned, its not just "black hat" its everything related to SEO that has been effected. This is normal in this field of work... Google "fixes" something and we adapt and find the next holes.

I actually like SEO because of this, always something new and it also weeds out competition from others that just give up from changes.
