File Access to Competitor Site

Any SEO experts have a creative idea to get an edge on competitors if you have file access to a site ranked ahead of yours in the same keyword?

editing their robots.txt maybe...

But this wouldn't benefit me much against the rest of the competition...

Email them about their problem and suggest a 3-way link exchange in return? Even if you do something they will fix it anyway.

I'm sure there are much more controversial things that could be done, but why even bother..

Even though this is blackhat world, we shouldn't go down THAT type of blackhat path. haha.

As stated above, if you make any changes they will detect it eventually and fix the problem and you would have only been in an advantage for a short period of time.

I would simply wait and watch what they are making to get the hits and also get the files which I would need most.

If they are not making any backups (you can see from their Cpanel and alike) I would simply delete all files and delete their website rankings from SEs after enough waiting.

Yes I have done this before, as a company which simply copied my website and got rankings forgot to delete my callbacks and more so I waited enough time for them to think that "everything was working fine" and when the correct time comes, it was a well payback time.

but what would be the difference between deleting all files and changing robots.txt to block spiders.

Few ideas I just thought of...
*Creating an anchor link that matches the background color?
*Redirect their traffic to my site through .htaccess file? - go further with this and maybe only redirect some sources of traffic, like yahoo...?

I would simply do this if I am sure that they are not making any backups. This way it would take more time for them to build the website again.

In my example the victims (which were co-workers of my company) were using the theme and data from my website and never got a backup.

You can of course redirect the traffic with an htaccess trick, it is your choice. It depends on the case. In my case my website was on the 1st listing of Google searches on the needed keywords and did not need any help from the victim's site.
