I'm using twitter for almost 1 year. As time passes, I realized that I was following worthless bots, and therefore I unfollowed 5000+. Here goes few tips to avoid Bots and Useless followings:
1) Avoid twitter account that uses twitterfeed for tweeting. From my personal experience, almost all of them (~95%) are running on autopilot using google feeds.
2) Visit each profile manually and if you find that there is not a single "@" in top 20 tweets, then avoid following. There is ~80%+ chance that this account will be a bot. It is may be because of unwillingness to tweet with anyone or to promote self product/service.
3) Most spamming bots uses lady pics.
Ok. So, whenever you follow someone, try to do followings by keeping above 3 tips in mind and it will hopefully filter near about 75% twitter bot accounts followings.
Why these 3 tips are essential:
Test yourself as follows:
a) take 2 twitter accounts with minimum 100 followers. (Reason: Legit twitter accounts won't follow you back if your account looks too young)
b) Follow 500 randomly with one account (Account A), and follow 500 with above tips in mind with other one (Account B).
c) Check the followers result. Suppose, you got followers 100* out 500 in Account A and 50 out of 500 in Account B. Some might say Account A is in better condition. Hehe. Lets do a further test. Post a Famous Quote of anyone in both accounts. Now check which account gets more Retweets
* 100 The followers count is high because many bot accounts do auto follow back whenever you follow them.
Conclusion:
I prefer 1000 genuine/human/participative followers, rather than having 5k bot followers. The tips also make sure to stay connected by regular tweeting with genuine people. What do you think?
Hope my little effort helps you a bit.
