For dropshipping, how would you set up say magento to handle the process of notifying the distributor to send out the product after it has been purchased from your online store? Does magento have a automated feature for that? Also can you automate paying your distributor? Thanks

Doing this automated will cause you problems and money. You need to verify every order and make sure it's legitimate before sending to DS. Otherwise expect to lose your ass to charge-backs and disputes. Some things work great with automation like keep the inventory pricing and stock counts correct with feeds from the supplier. Automated orders isn't wise. We toss about 10% of orders for obvious fraud.

but what if you're dealing with hundreds of orders? doing that manually will take forever.

I think they have to be done manually because some of the orders are just fake.

If you're dealing with hundreds of order why be be a drop-shipper, you can be a distribuier/retailer and hook your site with the manufacturer's servers.
