I have never transferred a domain before. Is it hard? I have my domain with godaddy at the moment

Nah, It's easy. Your first step is to request a transfer code from godaddy. Then go to name cheap and pay for the transfer. Then you'll enter the transfer code and a few days later it's at name cheap.

No, it was valid for that date only. But currently at namecheap still good discount deals are available for many domain tlds. So you should check it.
