some themes allow this by ticking a checkbox in the theme's settings. Did you check whether your theme has this function?

If it doesn't, you can use plugins like:

XO Featured Image Tools plugin, I am using that one.
https://wordpress.org/plugins/xo-featured-image-tools/
Considering you already have image in the post but its not featured, this plugin will take image from a post and make it featured.

Generate Press theme by default inserts image before H1,
you have to tick "don't show featured image in post"
