I am looking to start a youtube channel so that I can start doing affiliate marketing with the hopes of making some extra income aside from my 9-5.

The problem that I have is that I am not comfortable on camera and I want a facecam on my videos so that I can build an extra layer of trust with my audience.

My 9-5 job is a middle school teacher and I can get up in front of my classes and talk just fine, but the thought of being in a room by myself with just a camera is something that is a sort of road block for me,

Anyone have some advice on how I can overcome the fear of being on camera?

Thats normal. Just record and record you can always delete it dont worry :D
Try to find your starting sentence everyone has something different.

I think if it's something u love to do u wont have fear to do it..

I'm the same way so don't feel bad I find myself watching some lady on YouTube she can do anything on cam eat, pull her wig off, cry, put on makeup it doesn't matter she just don't care lol and here we are scared to show our face on a cam. She has over 70,000 subscribers by the way that are very loyal, I guess it goes to show people like authenticity.

Start doing videos without showing your face, the important thing is to START doing videos, after a while it will feel natural to show yourself on cam.

The more you practice, the easier it will become. Just do it and keep doing it.
You don't have to put the videos up straight away, spend a week just getting used to it and you should gain confidence.
Ask a friend to help if you need to.

Start by doing only voice over for the moment.

There are a lot of "trustworthy" YT channels where the creator never goes in front of the camera.

Start by doing voice over and when you will have some positive feedback and some engagement, I think you will have more courage to step in front of the camera.

This is also a good idea. I know a big YouTuber who did the same.

You're not going to become Michael Jordan shooting a basketball the first you do it. Same way with recording, you gotta practice repetition. Record it and delete it if it sucks.

Maybe you could approach strangers and strike up conversations to get over your fear

Just dive straight in at the deep end. Make a sex tape and get it out there, share it with all your friends. After that, you won't care less about showing your face on YouTube.

The question is, if you fear that being in front of a camera yourself might hurt your repuptation in real life or not.
If no, then just practice. In front of a mirror, just sit and talk to yourself (aka Robert de Niro from Taxi Driver).

This is one of the hardest yet the best method that I found out.

Keep a mirror above/behind your camera and start recording and look into the mirror (obviously to yourself)

This works. Can kill the hesitation and loss of words that you might feel while starting out.

No face, no fap.

Seriously OP, if you have the confidence to keep a classroom entertained, a camera is nothing. Or you can just ask someone to be there with you quitely, so while you're supposed to be talking to the camera, you talk to him/her instead, while you're actually talking to the camera.

May I give you an advice from a psychological view of point?

Exposure is the best learning if you experience fear. Try to record yourself over and over again in the front of the mirror, review your own progress often and it will get easier to do.

Make video recordings in class as part of a project...as a way to get used to it.

There are plenty of popular channels that just do voice overs. You can do this until you get some more practice and start to feel more comfortable in front of the camera.
