Absolutely, nothing is dead or impossible in IM. I still know some people who are making money from MySpace which pretty much proves the point. It would be a lot more easier to switch on to different methods as you can make a lot more if you put into something else which has got more potential.
So, if you're a lot of money and don't mind waiting few months to see the money flowing in, I don't think you will face any kind of problems. No matter what people say, its still the best and the most popular Social Networking site anyway.
