Stay (from 2005) - you will watch it at least 2 times. 2nd time it will be like you are watching an entirely different movie. Do not read about it before you see it or you spoil it. You will understand absolutely nothing first time you see it but that's how it's supposed to be because the ending is the answer. That is why 2nd time you watch it it is like a different movie because you already know the ending.
The Jacket - Simply awesome and as a bonus you see Keyra Knitley's ass crack

From the list above, to make choosing easier for you, here are the war movies I recommend to see soon if you haven't (not so popular/known movies):

1. Lawrence of Arabia - an epic classic with Peter O'Toole. Have no words to describe it as the acting is awesome.
2. Charlie Wilson's War - more of a spy/intelligence/behind the curtains movie
3. Revolution - Al Pacino, great acting as you'd expect
4. Downfall - Aboyt Hitler's last days, great acting, great picture and setup
5. Stalag 17 - Escaping from a POV camp in WW2
6. Max Manus: Man of War - Max was part of the resistance movement against Nazis in WW2
7. Hotel Rwanda - Lots of atrocities, ethnic cleansing, horrors of war, racism. Personally though it is not really grotesque I almost felt sick thinking humans do stuff like this to other humans.

And if you like the genre also watch Stay and The Jacket.

My personal favs....

Cross of Iron- James Coburn at his best as a German on the Eastern Front; if you've not seen it, definitely a must view.

What Did You Do in the War, Daddy?- And late 60s/early 70s vid about Americans moving up the Italian peninsula that basically take over the town and get completely hammered for four days with the Italian locals.

And no mentions for a classic? Kelly's Heroes...

Clint Eastwood, Telly, the Captain of the Love Boat, Archie Bunker, and Donald Sutherland spouting some of the best war movies lines ever...

"...That's 20 miles behind enemy lines.... Yeah, well, everybody seems pretty friendly."

As a former tank commander, Oddball was my role model in Desert Storm...
