Agreed, some class tracks from them. As with many of the bands mentioned on here. I could go on for hours about rock music particularly from that era, waaaaayyyyy better than the crap you get nowadays.

60s-70s The Kinks, 70s-80s The Clash with an honourable mention for The Jam. For all other times refer to The Fall.

Dire Straits were an outstanding group, Mark Knopfler was certainly not the best vocalist in the world but his voice 'fitted' his music perfectly. I prefer quite a number of their lesser know album tracks rather than the chart hits they had, although the two above were brilliant.

I saw them in person around 1985. My sister made me go because she was a big fan and didn't have anyone to go with. They were very good.You just hit the nail on the head with Deep Purple! Excellent group

Well, don't get confused between the two. The British did NOT invent rock...Bill Haley, Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry...they were all American. BUT...there was Cliff Richard, who was extremely popular (and still is). So even from the very beginnings of rock n' roll, there was some British music. The Beatles re-defined the genre, but...I should probably stop rambling now. The British bands are better, but the American ones are more numerous. In my opinion.

I don't see it as a contest as in who is better. Music lovers enjoy listening to many artists, no matter what the artist's nationality is.

I like both British and American rock artists, This thread was started specifically about British rock groups from the 60's & 70's though.

Couple of things you should consider.
1. The thread is not about who started rock and roll.
2. Blues was the main influential genre that started rock in roll and not one person can refute
that or I will send you tons of video interviews of artist saying that blues was the kindling of rock and roll.
3. Music is like any art and some person may pay a million bucks for a painting my niece could draw.
So in other worlds it's all a matter of opinion.
