This website statistics is bending my mind. I can't believe a stupid clickbank product that's a lousy .pdf file can make this amount of money. If you look at their site, it's basic html code and layout. Any noob idiot here should be able to recreate it with another niche. Here's what I've noticed:

It was getting almost 3.5 million hits per month between July and September of 2008. If you do the math at only 1% sales for a $40 product at those numbers: 3,500,000 x .01 = 35,000 sales x $40 = $1,400,000 per month gross sales.

I've noticed that their traffic is down to around 250k a month. Anyone know why the big drop? Is the life of this product basically over? (Even though I'd give my left nut sack to get 250k a month traffic for ANY niche.)

They'll notice that they've spent crazy amounts of money on adwords early on. I guess affiliates now bring in the most traffic so they don't have to spend nearly as much. I found this page on their website about this:


They're telling us that the trick is to NOT fire hose a ton of money directly at weight loss keywords but to target the key audience. (over 30 year old women) Find the right viewers and just place the affiliate ad on the page, they'll find the link themselves.

Anyone have this ebook? I can't find it in all the usual spots. (I guess I'm late to all this.)

This is killing me that this kind of money can be generated from basically online crap. I always thought you need a huge building with workers and trucks to make this kind of money.

Well, I don't really know if what they are saying is accurate or not. I worked in direct response for all of my adult life, and this type of reasoning and logic is not only counter-intuitive, it might be downright destructive to your bottom line.

While it's true that it's damn near impossible to compete in the weight-loss arena due to outrageous costs per click, targeting an offer to the demographic may not be the way to go either. Are they really saying try to sell chocolate ice cream to someone who's looking for a dart set?

I wouldn't push too far out of the active weight loss crowd if I were going after this market. What I can say about direct response in general though is that clients(AKA in this model - the guy giving you that advice) will ALWAYS seek the greatest exposure at the lowest cost even if it means getting a generally lower quality prospect. Clients have always thought "the more the merrier." They'd rather have 100,000 tire-kickers than 50 buyers. I didn't get it in the call centers, and I don't get it here either.

My guess is they believe they taxed out the direct search crowd, and are therefore sending people after needles in haystacks.

BHW geniuses - can you shed some light on the advice given by that clickbank marketer? Also, I hope I haven't illustrated my ignorance.

I know this post is a week or 2 old now but I really found their advice interesting. The example of selling ice cream to blokes buying darts isn't really on the right track. I know you weren't being literal but what fatloss4idiots is saying is to find who your target market actual are and tackle them from another verticial.

One example that I actually used was a DIY/home reno/men's humour site and placed ads for different adult sites as a site dedicated to men without being an adult site is going to attract men who are regular viewers or porn or maybe the innocent husband who just wants a quick look hehe.

The change of angle can be used in heaps of different places and it all comes down to what traffic you can get clicking your hoplink. You might have less CTR with a left of field market but the total clicks might be higher due to the higher traffic because you can target less competitive phrases.

I found their advice very thought provoking too.It reminds me of looking for dim stars with your peripheral vision.If women over 30 are on a non weight-loss site and they catch the FL4I ad it must feel to them like they're not being targeted ----gives me ideas

Reverse demographics!

It's a simple cross-market merchandising idea basically, retail/grocery stores do it every day, because it works.

Ever notice how every spring/summer you see special displays with cheap-o grills, charcoal and lighter fluids set-up in or very close to the butcher's area of the grocery store? Why, because if you're there to buy meats, and it's grilling season, there's a good chance that display might catch your eye and prompt you to buy a cheap-o grill too.

They want to push their grilling specials, and since most people grill meats, customers who come for meats are a good cross-market to target with their displays.

I did pretty well once with another weight loss product online by advertising it on a site that sold swim suits from January thru June. In Jan I hit the "new year resolutions" angle with my ads, then after that I went for the "get fit for bikini season" angle.

I wasn't targeting women by age, just cross-marketing to the desires of a similar crowd.

The principals can be applied to any market though. You just have to be a little creative in your thinking. If you run a portal site for writers it's obvious to hit them with "writing courses" advertising, but maybe not so obvious would be to advertise ink cartridges there because writers typically do a lot of printing too, so if you've got a deal on ink supplies you could do well with a crowd of writers.

That's just off the top of my head, with a little thought there's probably better ideas than ink cartridges in that situation, like I said it's just about being a little creative.
