Fair price for SEO?

Hey everyone,
I was just curious what a reasonable price would be to charge somebody who wants me to get there company ranked in Google. Very little competition (5,000 sites), and I could probably take over the whole first page, but I have no idea what to charge.

What country are we talking about?
 
First rule of marketing.................Supply and demand
Charge what the market will stand, so work out what its going to cost you to accomplish the task, in time and effort.
Then work out what margin you would be happy with, then test the waters with your potential client. If they recoil in horror then you have obviuosly pitched too high, if they snatch your hand off then you are too low.
The trick is to find the middle point :)
 
It depends what niche they are. If they sell pools and get $10,000 profit a sale charge them more than someone who runs an ebay store out of their house.

I don't have a price, it's like saying how much for a house. You can buy a house for 20k or 20 million, it all depends what they want to invest.

I just ensure they get a positive ROI on that investment, and i aim to achieve that before i even finish optimization. This nearly always results in them throwing more money at you to keep working.

So just ask them, how much would you like to invest?
 
detox, get a detox clinic for seo, they have a huge budget, trust me
 
I just landed a client for $1500 monthly for 12 months.

I've also done jobs for between $500 to $1000 for the whole job.

A lot of the pricing has to do with how competitive there market segment is and how much time it will take you to meet and exceed your clients expectations.
 
Charge an initial setup fee (Somewhere between $500-$1k) then charge by the hour (Normally $100-$150).
 
You really need to find out what kind of budget your "clients" have available to them. Obviously you wouldn't want to charge an extravagant amount of money if they don't have it available. Also you have to take into consideration what kind of "quality" SEO you will be doing. How much experience you have and how fast you can get it done also play a role in how much you should charge them...Just my $0.02
 
Use some street smarts. What kind of business is it? What do their facilities look like? How do they dress? What do they drive? Is there tension in the air...like money is tight? Are they a start-up brimming with optimism? Is hiring an SEO expert (I use this word lightly) their last ditch attempt at saving the company? Do the "top" people in the company live in posh neighborhoods (you can usually find this out through small talk)?

Once you've made your observations hit them up with a # that is probably a bit to high and then negotiate.

I've been surviving on doing just that... Since mid december the guy paid me $7k. I worked like hell and it WAS a competitive term. He gave up about 30 days ago, we're still friends but he ran out of money and patience. I learned a lot though, he is now on page 3 of BigG and moving up slowly but surely, though I haven't touched the site for over 30 days.

I'm guessing that a lot of what I did before (which was everything I could possibly do and what I learned here on other places) is just not taking effect. I don't doubt that I could have gotten him to page 1 if he hadn't stopped.

He was paying me $2,500 a month, which was decent, but certainly not getting rich money. I desperately wanted it to work (I was due to get an increase to $5k a month) and spent some of that money on outsourcers and some membership SEO sites.

All in all, good experience and I proved to myself that SEO works, but (at least with WH/GH) takes some work.
 
What tools do you use to see your actual "rank" in the organic results? And no, I don't care about just page rank.
