I had my webhost call me up today and try to upsell me some crap.

One thing the guy said was "i see you purchased one year for your domain name, why not purchase 5 years, it'll help get traffic to your site."

so that got me curious, so i asked him how.

he said that part of the search engine's algorithms is to see how long a domain is registered for (meaning will it expire next year or in 20 years) and that search engines consider a domain that is registered for longer in the future as more of an authority site, thus helping you in the SERPs.

I know they look at how long it has been registered to the same person in the past without expiring. I don't know if future registration time plays into it, but it could. On the other hand, saying that it does might just be him trying to get the sale.

that's bullshit, I seen some domain that is about to expire in 2-3 months time, rank no.1 in Google serp for competitive keywords.

Back in the day, I did see this come up in various pieces of literature, to be honest no one can really tell you yes or no as which most things regarding Google's algorithm. IMO I think it may be considered when dealing with domains housing spam and so on, but to be honest I've never seen any evidence, I would just ignore it.
