Short story: I am doing a favor for an old friend of mine who is a lot older than me and does not know how things online work. He also has a blog.

He is kind of a public figure and needs to spread the word around. I have been reading about the cons/pros of profiles and pages but I am still not sure.

What would you recommend? Our goal is to get his facebook posts noticed in news feeds and collect as many followers or likes as possible.

Thanks button will be pressed! :)

A fanpage as well as a profile will help him to spread his word.
If he is kind of a public figure and popular in the environment he lives or in special society circles, a profile can be more successful cause the people are proud being his friend ;-)
Anyway, both is good. I would probably choose the fanpage cause this sounds more reasonable for me for a public person. And it would be also easier for you to manage if you do from your own account.

A page is the better resolution. As a page it's much easier to see and understand how people are interacting with the page. You are also able to shedule future posts, which is only available for pages if you don't want to use a 3rd party app like hootsuite for profiles.
