Facebook Groups Finally Getting a Makeover [Hard to make viral group again]

Someone asked the question "what's better a group or page?" Can anyone give their opinion on that - I'm just about to start some promotion on FB for one of my sites that has a viral element to it and up until reading this thread was going to start a group. Now I'm a bit confused?

Also could someone advise me on this.
I have advertised on another site wanting to buy invites to my new group. I figured it might be a good way to kick start things. Had a few people asking for $120 to invite 1000 friends! but eventually had an interesting offer.

He has basically offered to post my group in a 'status update' to one of his fan pages with 1.5 million members.

I am new to this so my questions are:

He wants $100 for this - is this a reasonable price?

what form does this advertising take - what will a status update actually do - is this a good way to get his fans to my group - could he not direct mail them?

What kind of conversion could i expect - what have you guys experienced in the past with this kind of thing - how many fans should i expect to join my group.

Should i set up a page or group for promoting a site that has a viral element.

Sorry for all the question's but you guys really seem to know what your talking about here - thought i had it sussed till i read about the changes :(

Thanks a lot

first build group, and inside group bring people to join your fanpage.. you have double opportunity..

yeah facebook changed a lot; no more highlight page, cant share ppl comment now, confusing with live and news feed, and can be mistaken as spam if you are active in fb when you join groups, comments , share photos.... and the fucking hide button is so big that once ppl get piss off they can hide u easily.

from my initial testing, fb is now heavily focused on events, and dont bother with groups but straight go to fan page as the option to status update and mail them directly to their inbox is priceless now.

ill do more testing tomorrow as it is late here but at one glance, spam, tagging, and all those viral activities are long gone but with this new layout, if you are building a fan page and have active discussions, fb will put your post to the top immediately for everyone to see.

good thing i invested in creating lots of dummies accounts.

OK, I've found a way that should show info tab and it shouldn't leak.

All we have to do is make group to be "closed". Then info tab will be default when new user check the group.

Thanks Ledave, there's some really good tips there.

I got a little more info from the guy and he told me that I should expect around 3-5000 people to join my group - going on a previous experience. Couldn't believe this, seems low when you are talking about a group of 1.5m, I suppose only a fraction of the fans will see the status change. Surely direct e-mail to them would be better, or is that too close to spamming for a prized group
Maybe there's a better way to spend my money to build a base for my facebook exploits - anyway don't want to hijack this thread, I think I'll start another one - thanks for the advice.

Just wondering do pages lose the mass email thing at 5000 members as well?

Couldn't understand the question. you can send message to all members at once if you are group administrator.

BTW, I also don't like the new design and system of group.

Ledave, let me help you back.
To start a new thread just navigate to the section that suits your post the best and then just above the posts on the left you will see a start new thread button :))

very interesting. its a good way to get the info on the front page, but wont it say invite only or something like that when people search for your groups key word? if it does that will put a lot of people off, especially if it says something like group closed.

Saying that though i do have a number of groups that I was looking to close at their current level. so i will see how it goes and let you know the results

yes, this is more for "dead" groups

PS. yes LeDave, pages don't have limits for status updates

I don't know how many groups I have but few hundreds, maybe even more, I'm not sure, didn't count them for long time. Most of my groups are under 5k and available for PM-ing but I didn't spam them at all till now. Still haven't decide what to promote. Maybe I'll try to build some accounts using them (like my new neighbor/friend/cousin/little bro needs some friends bla bla). I guess there are over 2 millions of members in them so I could probably make some nice amount of accounts to use later for other stuff.

Dead groups - those that are not popular anymore, no new members or invites ( or rarely ), low or no activity inside groups etc..

Just setting up a group now. What is best advice on customisable bits; I want it to get used so don't want to be too restrictive but don't want the darned thing hijacked either.

Any advice on writing on wall, discussion board, enabling videos, links etc welcome
