Facebook’s group search algorithm seems to prioritize engagement, activity levels, and relevance over just keyword matching. Groups with more recent discussions, active members, and interaction tend to rank higher. Also, older groups with established authority might have an edge.

If your group is dropping, try boosting engagement with fresh posts, polls, and discussions around your target keywords. Hope that helps.

Facebook group search ranking isn't just about exact keywords anymore. While those still matter, the algorithm likely prioritizes active and engaging groups for searchers.

How to Improve Search Visibility:
  • Encourage Engagement – Ask open-ended questions or start discussions.
  • Use a Mix of Content – Combine images, videos, and polls with keywords.
  • Post at Peak Times – Find when your group is most active.
  • Optimize Post Length – Medium-length posts (100-250 words) perform well.
  • Use Synonyms & Variations – Instead of repeating the same keywords, use different variations

I manage a Facebook group with 61 k+ members for our SaaS. Yes, we sprinkled some keywords in the name of the group but I think we are able to grow it solely because of quality maintenance. The group is engaging and we post high quality resources regularly.

Facebook's search algorithm for Groups in 2025 has changed from what it used to be. It no longer relies solely on exact keyword matches, but increasingly prioritizes other factors like engagement, posting frequency, and useful content. Here's how it works:
✅ Factors That Influence Group Ranking in Search
1Engagement in the group
2Relevance to the searcher
Facebook prioritizes showing groups that a user is connected to.
If a user has previously joined or interacted with a similar group, that group will appear higher in search results.
3The content of the posts in the group (not just the group name)
Previously, groups with names that matched the keywords would appear higher.
Now, the algorithm also scans the content of the posts in the group to see if the group actually discusses a relevant topic.
4Posting Frequency (More Posts ≠ More Visibility)
Facebook no longer favors groups based on the number of posts (More Posts).
If a post has no engagement or is marked as spam, the algorithm will reduce visibility.
5Content Quality and Policy Compliance
If a group receives many reports, even if the content is not a serious violation, Facebook may reduce visibility.
Posts that violate policies (or age restrictions) will have their reach reduced in the group.

Facebook's group search algorithm prioritizes engagement, relevance, and freshness over exact keyword matches. Even with no violations, lower interaction or outdated content can push your group down. Focus on active discussions, fresh posts, and keyword-rich engagement to boost visibility.

I am also interested in this and am planning to do a test by asking people to search for the keyword and join my group, will see how it works.
