Facebook events... advantages?

I had an event with over 3k members, of course thats nothing compared to some people. But if you get past 5k, you can still message all the people in the event 
This recent Mashable article says there is a 5K messaging limit.

Does anybody here have first-hand experience with sending out more than 5K messages... actually more importantly, has anybody verified that these messages are being received when you go over 5K in an event?
Can anybody post a link to a large event where it looks like the creator is marketing something... I'm curious to see this in action.

I also would like to know if events as of today can post messages to more than 5000 people, if they can't it makes events just as worthless as groups. Then pages once more shall be worth the most to marketers.
