They'll probably never understand. In order for a like farm to avoid suspicions, they liked pages that were advertised too. That means a couple of those who paid for ads got "fake" likes too, there's nothing anyone could have done to prevent it.
It's like those who run clickjackers on someone's adwords campaigns, there's little anyone can do to prevent them.
