This is classic competitors elimination purchase. I deleted viber from phone, now I'm gonna do the same with whatsapp. Luckily there are alternatives like kik, line and piip messenger.

Not exactly. They just buying out the competitors, in order to remain a monopoly.
If you look down the history, it is the only way to remain on the top long enough and make "a buck or two".

Vanderbilt, Rockefeller and J.P. Morgan serve as a good examples, and pretty much back up the above.
