I clicked an add for a t-shirt company this evening on facebook called hobo jack, ive seen about 8 different brands advertising to me on insta in the past hour or so, all t-shirt companies, no association to the hobo jack brand

Why am i seeing a sudden influx of t shirt companies targeting me ?

Is this done through look a like audiences or something else ?

That's interesting! I'm following this one for answers from experts

The other companies are targeting the company's audience that liked their page. So thats why you get all these ads after you liked that one page. The other companies want you to like the page as well.

Haven't you heard that Facebook collects all your data? When you visit some kind of pages you'll always see ads connected to the topic. That's how it works. They know everything about you :)

They all target a brand's audience / you liked some ads related to t shirts / you did something on Facebook related to t shirts.

Google collects all your search info and targeted marketing works like that. You were looking for a flowers to buy and the next moment you will have 100 variants of flower markets as an ads appearing on a random website. I use Tor browser in order to avoid that total control.

On the Hobo Jack page they might be using the FB Pixel which captures your data (now they can remarket to you later on FB if they want to, or create a custom audience of people that are the same gender, age range and have the same interests as you etc.)...

But for this one, it's basically what people above said, when you clicked the ad, it signaled to FB that you're interested in tshirts or a specific type of clothing.

When placing a FB ad, you might be able to target "People who liked Hobo Jack" or something along those lines (if the company is big enough and reputable) or just targeting something along the lines: fashion, tshirt design, and other companies that are larger than Hobo Jack but are in the same "FB category"

This is not a new thing bro. From the starting itself this is happening in all the social media networks. They will collect all you details including your search history, so they can easily target you.

To me it sounds quite wierd, that RIGHT AFTER clicking you would be targeted by MANY advertisers of the same offer. (IF thats the only action you took, mind you)

if it was hobo jack retargeting it would make more sense. maybe there is some pixel scam in some niches, where visiting 1 page will mark you with multiple vendor pixels.

Think about it this way - i targeted the right user for my business + facebook know many things about you before you clicked on a tshirt ad, they have plenty of ads in line they can deliver you.

Why would facebook just hand out my data to my competitors right away? and spam its users with 1 type of offer rapidly (if they have an 8 hour impression cap set in the first place)

i dont say that what OP mention cant happen, but it shouldnt happen - and i bet facebook dont promote it that aggressively, not that they are angels - i just grasp it as too much backfire possible from advertisers and users alike.
