Facebook Ads - Need help targeting an audience

Hey Guys,

This is my first time using Facebook Ads. I have a service which the target audience is: Authors (and Publishers perhaps). I couldn't find any target "interests" while filling out the Facebook Ads form which was for authors.

Any tips or suggestions on which interests to pick or anything else in order to ensure I'm targeting published Authors? So far, I just winged it and selected a couple interests of "Writing" and "Literature".

Are there any famous blogs, websites or forums for writers... try to target those.

Are there any famous books or courses for authors, any special events for authors, any well known gurus or schools/universities for authors? etc.

Hmmm... you're targeting authors but don't know where they might be on Facebook. Doesn't seem like you researched your market too well. Are you targeting self-published or traditional published authors? What are you promoting...web design, cover design, kindle formatting? Can't be promotion :rolleyes:

Know this...authors are cheapo!
 
Thanks for the helpful reply, IamNRE. As for what type of publishing, it doesn't matter. Self-published or traditional is ok. I know where the authors are on facebook but I guess I'm still not confident in how to use facebook Ads. For example, I searched for and selected a few "precise interests" to target of: writing, literature, self-publishing, self-publishing ebooks, and ebook. That gave me way too broad of an audience though of 13.8 million people. Yikes.

LOL... I see what you did there.

I've worked with authors, mainly self-pub, for more than 2 years now. Try targeting fan pages or locate group ID's for further targeting. I'd suggest you pause your campaign a bit until you get better targets.

Is that for US only? 13.8mil. is quite a lot.

Refine your targeting.... target people between the aged of 40-65, women...

and really make good ad for that target market.

Also you want to make a fan page and send the fans to that you will get much cheaper clicks than sending them direct to your website, but if thats not converting then def. send the traffic directly to your landing page.

That's also what I wasn't too sure about.. the location. I targeted the top 5 english-speaking countries: Canada, USA, UK, NZ and Aus. I didn't want to limit the ads on gender since a lot of the authors I met were men and women of all ages.

I've created a list of author fb pages but on each page, I can't find out where they have their "interests" listed. If I could find what authors have listed as "interests", then at least I can have better targeted interests.

I'll see if I can find any good fan pages for authors.

I had another look at what options facebook gives me when building a target audience. Not many (from what I can see).
1. Precise interests (writing, literature, ebook, etc..)
2. Broad interests (Activities - Reading: 280 million) I probably don't want to select any broad interests.
3. Connections
- Target users who are connected to: "enter your page, app or event name"

From the above 3 options, I don't see where I'd enter any famous blogs/websites/forums etc once i found them.

In the precise interest section, add names of authors and books similar to your category.

I managed to use a program to extract the facebook UIDs of the members from a few facebook groups which have authors active in them. This resulted in 97K people. I've uploaded the csv, it said it uploaded the 97K UIDs BUT it made the "estimated reach" only 26K. Not sure what's up with that?

  • Who live in one of the countries: United States, New Zealand, Canada, United Kingdom or Australia
  • age exactly 18 and older
  • Who are in the custom audience AuthorsFB
