Ezinearticles SEO - get listed in the top 10

Is there any backlink building or seo involved with getting an article listen in the top ten with a keyword with low SERPS?

i've done a search with low SERPS and theres articles at the top almost always..

can i write a good article with a good keyword density and be indexed and ranked high without building backlinks and all that other BS?

Is it that simple and what do i need to do to rank in the top ten with an article on ezine if the SERPS is below 50,000?

any ideas or tips?

Im writing my articles from scratch so it's quality content, and my niches have low SERPS for my long tail keywords in that niche.

any ideas? any tips to help me rank in the top in google? I want to tackle the small niches first before i try to rank high in google with the search results at millions..i think thats the easiest way and making small steps.

you will need a lot of backlinks to your anchor text/article from high PR websites/pages, to rank higher in top 10 of g00gle for example. is not easy.

whats my anchor text? is that the keyword im trying to optimize for? also could i use a program like xrumer to do this? would the same rules apply to google trends and a blog lets say im on my game and throw up a blog with content do i still need tons of backlinks to high PR sites?
