Extreme traffic increase from google only for one day?

My website is 1.5 year old with PR4.

Last few months my daily traffic was arround 600 users. 70% from search engines.

Yesterday something strange happend.
I received over 6000 users almost exclusively from google.

I watched google analytics Real-Time section and saw whole day 60 - 130 active users on site. (Usually i have like 0 - 5)
AdSense and other earnings skyrocketed by factor 10

All traffic were organic from Google coming to a single page targeting California related long tail
Google didnt provide me the keywords - (not provided)


Unfortunately it lasted only one day. At this moment - day later I have only 13 active users so its fading away to normal.


I wish I knew what happened with my site that day.
Anyone experienced something similar?

BTW, I dont actively build any backlinks for my site.

Check which page received more organic traffic that day.

I dont know if it was one or many keywords.

Also did you setup google webmaster tool, if so you probably can find the high traffic keywords there! If not, then make sure you get it asap

Thanks for this. I have webmaster tools activated. But it's showing data with some delays. Fot me usually one or two days. So I need to wait.

According to Google Webmaster Tools
I had that day 31 355 impressions and 8 840 clicks

Usually i have arround 9000 impressions and ~500 clicks

Webmaster tools indeed told me which keywords brought the traffic.
The thing is I am indexed for these keywords at least few months and positions in SERP for these keywords didnt change too much (im in top 5)


I think extraordinary huge amount of people from USA searched for some of these keywords that day.
I tried to confirm this on Google Trends but they are showing me only statistics for whole month and I dont fully understand their metrics. But yeah they are showing some increase compared to previous months.
