Can someone explain deep link building to me?

I have a site with 10 million pages, is this what I need to get pages indexed?

I would think just backlinking to these inner pages would be definitely enough to get your pages indexed?
 
Deep link building is building links to inner pages to get them indexed and ranked in google. An average link pattern shows links to various destination of the sites rather then only to one or two specific pages.

So are you saying if I have 1 million pages, I should get backlinks to page 100k, 300k, 500k, etc, etc... And that would help get those pages to ranked, and this would cause higher indexing?
