Looks like most of the top 10 domains getting the highest bids either have almost no backlinks or are just spammed out, which isn't great for SEO in what we're talking about here. Take 193.cc, for instance – it's got the highest bid right now at $24,000, but only 3 RDs. Sweetpaulmag.com is kind of an exception in these auctions. It's got a pretty solid SEO history and backlinks. I was focusing on domains with the biggest bid amounts, but you were looking at how many bids they got, so we're on different pages.
So, here’s the deal: domains fetching the top dollar usually aren't great for SEO and can't really leverage their past SEO glory. I get that the good expired domains don't go for cheap. But why people buy them? That’s not always clear. I mean, lots of them sit unused for years, so it seems like they're not being snapped up for SEO reasons.
What I'm saying is, good expired domains get high prices not because of their past, but because there's a big appetite for expired or auction domains for reasons we might not fully get. Like, I tried to get aaf.com about three years ago. Looked like a killer domain for making some cash. It went for $45,000, but no one's put up a money site on it since then.
