Expiring domain advice

The local small company wants me to maintain their website. Domain is .com almost 12 months old. I want to move domain to my register and I have 3 options:

1. Let it to expire, then buy it after 30 - 40 days. I think it should cost $9
2. Transfer it to my register - Cost $35

Since it's very small company and they want the cheapest solution my question is; after old register drops domain will it cost same $9 like any other brand new .com domain or it will cost much more?

There is small chance that someone else will buy this domain since it has very specific name and no links.

Go with second option, why take the risk of anyone else buying it.

Domain is already registered you just want to shift it ? Check Namesilo for cheap transfer. I didnt get it.

I would definitely do that if it's my domain. They said that first option is good for them but I wonder about price, will it be again $9 or much more?

Domain transfer costs the same as domain registration. Of course, depends on registrar you are using. Namesilo or Namecheap should be like $9 I believe. And yes, that's the path you should take.

If you are running a biz off of maintaining their website, it is your absolute duty not to lose it.

Go with the more expensive option and do not lose it. You should have not started a biz or not charged them enough to more than cover this-- people out there have bots set up to snap up expired domains with certain types of traffic, no matter how small. Once they own it, they can name their price for you to buy it back.

It may be a very small chance, granted, but they are paying you to take care of it. Tell them the cost is going to be $45+ to keep their domain name, that's just how it is.
