If an expired domain is not in google index.
Would that be an automatic rejection of the domain name?

Can you be little bit more specific? Automatic rejection from where?

It can mean several things. Maybe it was dropped.

It means nothing basically, just adds to uncertainty. It's either fine and will get indexed or it's manually penalised and it won't.

You could go for it, if it fails to index or if webmasters shows penalty then get it deleted for a full refund. But it would depend upon your domain registrar.

If it is new or just purchased then it is very likely not in the index. Set it up and get it indexed. If google indexes it then google likes it.

Maybe it would be rejected or it was a new one.And it couldn't index properly

Check whether it has clean history & anchors. If everything is clean and decent, then you can request them to re index or else it will be penalized permanently by google.

To vaguely answer your questions. Yes MOST of the time it's crapola!
Could it be a hidden gem, probably not.. run it on ahrefs and wayback and see if it was an acqual site or just a pumper.
