Of course they pass link juice. As long as domain has an existing backlink profile, it will pass link juice no matter how long it has been on ice.

Oof, don't open this can of worms! There's a running debate on them passing link juice. But honestly, I've had 2x Expired domains 301'd to my money site that naturally dropped and they've passed a nice bit of juice to my site. (Just make sure they're bloody niche relevant!)

I think the expiring auction would be a better place to look - all the good ones are either bid with a high price, or even marginal ones will still have a small price tag to it - but still valuable.
The expired ones are the ones that have been screened through and most of these are practically useless, and that is why nobody registered them.

I have used both; there isnt a strict pattern from my results. At best auctioned domains at times have great results and at times not. On the other a cheap dropped expired domain also does wonders at times and at times it dont!

Auction domains will be more expensive, but I prefer them because you can build your site (and more backlinks) quicker.

Yep. Vendors cost more but it leaves me a ton of time for other important things like marketing and video games.
