is google still passing link juice from expired domains or is it only safe to buy via auction now?

I personally use auction only. The ones that never dropped and never had their registration date reset.

And here I thought I taught you better. :)

Of course they pass link juice. As long as domain has an existing backlink profile, it will pass link juice no matter how long it has been on ice.

There is still much debate if google regards drop debate as important.

Oof, don't open this can of worms! There's a running debate on them passing link juice. But honestly, I've had 2x Expired domains 301'd to my money site that naturally dropped and they've passed a nice bit of juice to my site. (Just make sure they're bloody niche relevant!)

I think the expiring auction would be a better place to look - all the good ones are either bid with a high price, or even marginal ones will still have a small price tag to it - but still valuable.
The expired ones are the ones that have been screened through and most of these are practically useless, and that is why nobody registered them.

I have used both; there isnt a strict pattern from my results. At best auctioned domains at times have great results and at times not. On the other a cheap dropped expired domain also does wonders at times and at times it dont!
Conclusion: Dont ignore either!

I think that the results speak for themselves.

They both work providing they are clean with a decent history and backlinks.

I use both expired and auction domains, and they both pass juice.

Expired are cheaper but it might take you a little longer to rank due to having no age (potential sandbox).

Auction domains will be more expensive, but I prefer them because you can build your site (and more backlinks) quicker.

If you're just starting out, go for expired. If you have cash, auction. Sometimes the decision comes down to how nice the domain name itself is. Occasionally, I register fresh domains because the name itself is brandable or exactly what I need for the project.

my opinion, you can use expired domains for link juice

I would use auctioned domains assuming the price isn't too far off, just to retain domain age.

Of course they are, and they always will. Links work that way if they are live - period!
