Expired domain subdomain - recreate or redirect?

If most or all of a domain's backlinks are pointing to a subdomain, what's your take? Recreate the subdomain and put the site on it, or redirect it to root?

If you're going to use it to link from I would recreate the subdomain. I always suspect a little bit of "juice" gets lost in a 301, although it's more of a hunch than a fact...

I would redirect it to the root.

You could use the subdomain itself for the best juice possible, though 301 redirect may also be as good.
