Expired Domain any Value?

I found a website listed in Yahoo's directory, it is listed in the same sector that I would want to list my company. The website used to belong to a competitor but they must have let it expire for some reason a few years back. I checked in the way back machine and it used to have content back in 2006 but nothing since then.

Do you think it is worthwhile me registering it and putting up some content all linked back to my main domain just to get the benefit of the traffic that the Yahoo directory may bring. I thought at the very least it would save me paying $299 to Yahoo for a directory listing.

You could do that... Or you could buy it and just 301 it to your domain... If it is in the same niche as your site, you could gain some (or most, depending on who you ask) of the value from the backlinks that domain had.

Without knowing more of the specifics, I'd actually lean towards the 301.

So would a 301 redirect be just as good as hosting new content? Thanks for the advice, if more specifics are needed to help me a bit more ask away. The site is in exactly the same niche.

This is interesting. Expired domains will drop their pr and backlinks but a yahoo directory listing...it could well keep that. This is a good find. Any idea if it's getting any traffic from there?

No idea if its seeing any traffic, I havent got anything to lose so I will register it. I think its worthwhile checking through the Yahoo directory in your niche to see if there are any expired domains that are still listed. I also had a look through DMOZ for any in my niche but there wasnt any, I found a couple that returned 404 but they were still registered.

Do You think, there are big difference between Apache 301 redirect and php header redirect?

No, its the same effect for G.

301 is 301 - permanent redirection
