Expired domain - Add as a backlink or a 301 redirect?

What is the best use for a expired domain with 600 backlinks? To create a page and a backlink to main site and possibly some subdomains....or a full 301 redirect is more effective?

No need for subdomains.
If the domain is exactly the same niche, do 301 if not, put a lot of content and backlink
 
if old link relevant to the new then 301 redirect is the best way. all the backlinks will be there and you will not be lost your ranking in search engine as well. Sometimes it just take no time to regain all the link juice but sometimes it may be bit late.
 
I'd opt to link from the expired domain to your site or perhaps build the expired domain into a money site. My least preferable option would be a 301.
 
If the expired domain same to your niche means you can redirect.
 
Check the 600 backlinks of the expired domain and see if you think they would be beneficial to your website. If they look relevant, clean and good, 301 redirect to your website.

If they maybe look a little spammy or wouldn't fit good into your money website backlink profile, create some content and backlink it to your money website and turn the 600 backlinks into tier 2.

Exactly what I did with my main website. Worked like a charm, to be honest.

I created a landing page with a unique article for around 1k words and a cta button at the end, along with a few backlinks inside the text.
 
Expired domain with relevancy, clean backlink profile and history then I would suggest 301. Those sites already have build authority and once search engines pick up those links(if it is redirected correctly), link juice and traffic will be passed to your site.
 
If 301, then renew the domain, put similar content to your money site, wait until indexed. If possible - wait until some rankings, then redirect. Works much better, especially if content on redirect domain is targeting for the same keyword as monesite.
Redirecting dead domain is hit or miss
 
Instead of redirecting the entire site, use a tool like Ahrefs to find the links with the best metrics, and 301 only these through .htaccess.

What about the hosting...if I host it on my same plan as money site it will have the same IP right? Should I get a new host for that domain or is that not very relevant?
 
301 redirect is effective until there is no harmfulness to your site due to these kinds of backlinks....
 
301 redirect means that a page has permanently moved to a new location. If your expired domain is relevant to your niche then you will go to 301 redirects. 301 redirects can be so useful for boosting organic traffic.
