experience with mobile apps and ads

i'am a developer from germany and i started to think about app development for android using xamarin.
who has experience with ads in mobile apps? Is it profitable? i already started to write an app like whatsapp but with random chat rooms. my goal is to make a passive income. are here some
successful developers and can share some information? my idea is to create the app share it with friends and do some advertisement with a facebook page to get downloads + ratings. has someone > 1.000.000 downloads? how long does it take for you?
