IF you look at woodward or jacobking, they all use exit popups. Even some of the biggest sites use them. For affiliate sites, I would definitely use them as they, in my experience, perform far better than regular popups.
I think this occurs because people are trained to exit out of regular popups, but exit popups catch their attention more. Thus, you get a higher conversion/opt-in rate.
