Exchanging backlinks with webmaster - where is the red lineÉ

I am planning to do more outreach for my new website. I assume situations may arise when other webmasters would rather exchange backlinks than accept guest post.

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge when this can result in Google penalty? How much is too much in this case?

The best way to do that is not a 2-way link exchange, but either a 3-way or 4-way link exchange, in which case it is much harder to detect. So for example if you get a link from a webmaster, in exchange you give him a link from another of your sites (not the same one), and link to another of his sites (again not the same site of his). This example is a 4-way link exchange, which would be very hard to detect.

Regarding basic 2-way link exchange, I almost never do that, I guess you could do a few but google can detect this right away, as this is reciprocal and easy to compute for them. And it is a red flag (as this is not natural in large quantities).

Also buying links sometimes can be very bad since they can report you for paid links. !
