estimated time to getting indexed by google?

Depends on what you do with the site.

I've found that to be the case for my wordpress sites. Wordpress automatically pings the web, so Google picks up on it. If you're doing a built-from-scratch HTML or PHP site, you should manually submit your site to Google and do some pinging and it might be 48 hours in that case. Not sure about that one.

On my wordpress I've noticed 24 hours normally, but has little as 28 minutes if my rss feed pushes to twitter, facebook etc.

I seen a thread the other day, where someone had mentioned a ping site they had that would index a site almost instantly. Don't remember where the thread was though.

One of my sites was "self-hosted" on a private server, and it was indexed within an hour of setting up the registrar to point to the host.

There's a lot of stale and out-dated information being thrown around as gospel. Be careful what you believe, both what you see outside of yourself, and what you've incorporated from what you've "learned" in the past. Much of what used to be true is simply wrong now.

your site should get indexed pretty fast...it really doesn't matter if its one hour or one week, your site will get indexed...
