I've read in sevelar post on this forum that EPN might track your MAC adress.
Some members even claim for sure they do.

I'm not a network expert or anything, however I simply can't understand how this is possible.

Is there anyone who know for a fact if they do track MAC adresses?
Is it even possible to track your mac adress just by browsing the Internet? I didn't think so, but maybe I've thought wrong for a long time.

No, they don't. This is being said with years of experience with multiple accounts, and I take every precaution other than worrying about the MAC address.
 
Take this as general information:
No website or web server will ever track your mac address, they can not.
Only exception of this rule is if you install software from a specific company
 
Thanks a lot for your answers. Confirms what I thougth at first:) Hopefully this will clear up this "issue" for others as well.

Thanks for starting this topic, I've replied to people's posts in the past telling them EPN can not log their mac address, but the rumor just keeps on rolling.

Hopefully this thread puts it to rest. EPN can not track your mac address... unless they hack into your computer or network ;)
 
I doubt they could do this and don't think they could but their stats interface uses flash, I don't suppose it is possible to send additional info through flash somehow?
 
I know it was in theory possible through java, but many people disable java (not javascript). With the sophistication of flash now it's POSSIBLE, but very unlikely as it could be noticed quickly.

Also my understanding it's very difficult to get the MAC address since there are so many different types of devices that use it and how. My thought it would be your modems MAC first, then your router, and then your NIC or machines MAC. You would have to log a lot of different ones, and keeping track of that is difficult.

It was thought, and probably still is thought, that Google does the same thing. Though no one has ever shown it to be true, and Google DOES have the processing power to do it.

I havn't really seen any who have clarified the issue in a good matter. People tend to just say, yes they do, no they don't withouht now how it really works. Hopefully someone knows more about this than others and can clarify this for the others.
 
The MAC address is a local address (learn about OSI model, tcp/ip layer model)
Javascript is a scripting language with no support to show your mac, java is a VM language and also has no such support + it's in a security zone with limited possibilities.

The only way to get your MAC is through software on your PC, either hacking your PC or you install it

excuse my ignorance, but i thought the only time to be concerned about your mac address is if you do online gaming, am i right?
 
An online game is usually software on your PC, it can extract your MACs and other identification signs. But these days the games usually use your hased license key as identification, that's much more reliable and can't be faked that easily.

Whenever you have software on your computer anything can be used to identify you, also the MAC.
Without special software your MAC is something noone can see outside of your personal LAN
 
MAC addresses are Layer 2. They do NOT go across layer 3 devices (your Linksys router, or one of your ISPs routers). Do a traceroute to any website and you'll see there are many hops (routers).

If you're still scared, use a VM. A VM will have a different MAC than your PC.

Correct.

Also you can use SMAC for spoof the MAC if you feel like they can do that, use VM or SMAC and deal with the myth :)
