Empty Portfolio

If you wanna get the chance to atleast start in this business you will have to promote yourself and your "company" like the biggest web design business in the world.Also accept any job you get nomatter the enormity or the complexity of it, or that you think you can't do it.
It also dipends alot of how much You think you are worth.If you think you can take on jobs from big boys then invest in promotion.If you think you can design small projects that takes minutes to complete then head to fiverr and wait in line with the other 5000 web desiners.

Also i wan't to state that i have no experience in this business so my advice is not guaranteed success.

Yeah a great way to get a portfolio behind you is to offer some discounts on services, offer a free limited design (with options to upgrade for a low cost), giver referral bonuses, ask friends or family that have business if you can design something for them in return for a review and inclusion in your portfolio. There are really countless ways to do this. Remember this rough quote by Eric Thomas "when you want it as bad as you want to breath you will succeed" use that as motivation for you building your portfolio. Just work at a few of those suggestions above and you will have a portfolio in no time at all.

At university, we was told to create a handful of sites on various niche subjects and imagine that the sites are for real world clients. Then use them examples in your portfolio, make company names up, get friends to write recommendations, use those recommendations with the designs you made giving people the impression that the websites was created for real world clients.
It may take you a few days/weeks, but it's worth it as nothing is better for business than a strong portfolio and recommendations.
Another option if you don't have time is to save up $50, and get on Fiverr and get 10 designers to build you a webpage each, then use those designs on your portfolio. (obviously taking off any text/images that the designer places on his/her page)

Go to the download section here, download 20 themes... upload them to your host, quickly redesign the layout... make a nice screenshot and go onto the next theme... repeat until you are happy! Then populate your portfolio with these... blurring the website names to "protect" your clients privacy
