From my experience EMDs definitely help. Try adding an "s" somewhere to make it plural if it is product based name or a dash, or even try switching keywords if they make sense.
From my experience, .com is always seen as the top choice as far as what Google looks for. As marketers get smarter at exploiting loopholes and as time goes on, Google will be concentrating more on algorithm factors that are not easy to manipulate. Since there is only 1 .com available for any specific domain choice, among similar quality sites, I believe .com will only gain importance as time goes on.
So far I have been working with .orgs and .nets. Have 0 experience with .coms so I can't really say, but I can guarantee that .nets rank better than .orgs but have worse clicks. That is from my own experience and research and might not apply to your case, but i thought i'd share anyway!
What I do is pick a couple kws for that niche and I stuff them into the domain. Then rank all thous kws. It might not be the exact .com but it ranks easier then some random site. Plus I get traffic for multiple kws
