EMD's are a marketers next choice after a brand name domain.
for example if you're selling vibrating dildos named "dilbrator" but "dilbrator.com" is already taken and "vibratingdildos.com" is not, no matter how much thought you put into it, buying an aged domain that has no RELEVANCE to your product will be a bad choice.
A lot of people here, and even Google, like to stress the fact that SE traffic is all about RELEVANCY, but I guess that an EMD is not so RELEVANT to your product as an old domain would be. How the hell do you sell VIBRATING DILDOS with a domain name "electronuclearpowerplants.com" is beyond my grasp... although if the dildos you're selling would be powered by nuclear energy and you would dedicate a part of your website to that fact I'm guessing you'll be able to rank that domain for searches like "VIBRATING DILDOS".
All in all a domain name is nothing without content that's relevant for your desired niche and search terms. NO! You will not be able to sell VIBRATING DILDOS just because you have a domain called "vibratingdildos.com" and NO! you will not be able to sell them just because you have a 30 year old domain that has no RELEVANCY to your niche.
