    Bobgoe,

The fact that website owners were using EMD's was not the target of the recent update that wiped many of them off the SERP's but rather those owners were doing a variety of other things that got them demoted and EMD's are typically part of the equation for low quality sites trying to rank quickly. Google (or any other search engine for that matter) really doesn't care what URL you use as long as you have quality content and you don't appear to be deceptive in your practices. An EMD is still a powerful signal however I would be careful about how the rest of your site is built (i.e. the presence of tactics that could be considered deceptive). Google seems to be targeting sites that have a "perfect storm" of optimization which has EMD's as one of the criteria.

This post talks more about the subject,

    http://localsearchforum.catalystema...al-exact-match-domains-still-rank-google.html

As does this one from SEOMoz,

    Hope that helps,

    Shawn

^ This. I have several EMD's at number 1 that stayed exactly where they were following the update. As the user above me says the ranking factors are vast and varied and you won't get penalised soley for having an EMD; that'd be ridiculous.

Want to confirm that. Just do not put too many stress on the best anchors.
Create many backlinks from many type of websites with many anchors.
Add min. 10-15 pages of fresh content.
Do not blast your site with 100s of crappy backlinks.
    Spun content works well here.

    That's just my opinion.

Matt Cutts tweet about "low quality" EMDs and I believe he was honest with that. Aged EMDs with good backlink profiles weren't touched.

I think it was more on the allowed anchor text diversity that EMDs are enjoying. In my experience, some EMDs who went over a certain number of % of DF links got hit while some EMDs who are equal to that or below that weren't.

The fact that a site is an EMD will not per se be a danger. Is a number of factors that can put a site in danger of a EMD penalty
