Email List For A News Website?

My friendpurchased a news site a little while back and it gets a really good amount of traffic. I've been helping him grow the traffic and done some seo for him, put some strategies and helped him with systems for his writers.

Went from 30k to 70k visitors after a few tweaks. Got adsense earnings up and told him to do reviews on tech from amazon as well but now I want to help him take it to the next level and get an email list growing.

For a news site, what do you guys recommend.
Weekly news delivered straight to your inbox kind of thing or add some kind of lead magnet?

I'm used to doing affiliate sites growing lists that way but these visitors are very broad because they just there to read the news. I suggested he grow the list because it will get returning visitors and another way to monetise the site.

Anyone else here have a news sites? How are you monetising.

I have a news type site among others and there are a couple of things you can do.

Email sign up is definitely the way to go, you could also integrate Push notifications.

You can actually do both a lead magnet and news features sent to inbox.

But, without a shadow of a doubt the biggest monetization method I have is using co-registration at sign up.

Lets say you offer 8 co reg offers and get paid just $0.50 for each. 8 x $0.50 = $4.00 just for signing up to your newsletter. Now lets say you get 750 signups per day, that is about $3000 per day or $1 million per year just for signing up to your FREE newsletter. And on top of that you can segment the list and send appropriate affiliate offers etc as well as news!

What exactly is co-registration?

Co-registration can occur when someone signs up to say your newsletter with their name and email. But before they are taken to the download/confirmation page there is an intermediate page with a number of offers on it. Typically all they have to do is tick a box and their name and email data is automatically added and they subscribe to those newsletters as well. You then get paid per offer they sign up to.
