Effects of a shared server on SEO

I just read that Google tries to punnish websites that are on shared servers with other, spammy websites on them.
Now I've only owned 1 succesful website in the past that got most/all of its traffic from SERPs and that one was on a dedi.
Whats your experience with dedi vs. shared SEO wise? Would you reccoment getting a US dedi for optimal results when starting a whitehat authority site?

don't worry about it too much. the vast majority of all websites are on some kind of shared platform. As long as you are with a reputable host, you need not be concerned. a dedicated server is obviously optimal, but it's generally best to start with a standard shared plan or VPS, then scale up as necessary...unless you just don't mind wasting the money to maintain dedicated services.
 
Lol.. If that was the case, then over 80% sites would have been banned by google and we would would have been making millions if we just had a dedicated server :P
 
Other than site speed, you shouldn't really worry about shared hosting. But if you optimize your site, it should be of no issue at all to Google.

Upgrade to VPS or dedicated server when your traffic exceed the spec of the shared hosting. Otherwise, you're good.
 
The internet is full of bollocks seo myths from self proclaimed gurus. Where did you read it? WF?

Actually, I kind of misread the "Fighting Spam" page from Google where it talks about free hosting and dynamic DNS:

Site is hosted by a free hosting service or dynamic DNS provider that has a significant fraction of spammy content.

But YES, this apparently nonsense rumor has been around for years.

I totally agree with you dedicated server working awesome.
 
what about hosting different sites on the same hosting package? Will it affect SE results? I remember reading somewhere before that it's not recommended if one is intending to use the sites for adsense purposes (e.g multiple money sites hosted on same server).
 
It is essentially the same as shared hosting.
