Effective ways to block spam for Wordpress?

Thanks to everyone who answered, I will give it a try on some of the methods listed here. As I mentioned before, since it's a blog, people are meant to comment and I can't just turn comments off.

What I wanted was for spam to be immediately detected, flagged and deleted, not for me to moderate through all the garbage.

You can definitely block spam based on content by using plugins like Akismet or Antispam Bee, which filter comments with typical spam keywords or suspicious links.
