I know there are many writers on this forum and I thought I would share my strategy to become a better writer. I myself am not the most versed or elegant writer in the world. I know if I had an editor, he would go nuts, but to me a broken sentence is a learning experience. I like to read sections of the dictionary and take it everywhere that I go. It sounds really silly and simple, but if you think about it we wait for long periods of time during various routines in our lives. Taking a break or lunch. Waiting for a task to get done. In queue for something. I sometimes read whole sections of the dictionary to see the word similarities and sometimes I look at each word without looking at the definition to see if I knew what it was or how to use it in context. Lately, I do a mixture of both, I will read a part of the dictionary with the definition and other parts without looking at any of the definitions and only looking at the words. Many of us are use to looking at our phones when we are in those types of situations but why not take a dictionary, thesaurus, or book with you. It will save your eyes and make your brain think differently. Skimming through a book is a good way to jumble words around and paragraphs, so that you create new variations of syntax, it may not make sense but it may produce new thoughts. As I am flipping through pages, I pick up a certain vibe from the book, like maybe our brains can manage the information as fast as we can see it, but we are unable to process it the language that is native to our tongue. I like to read only one chapter from a book and never read any other part of it. It is like solving a puzzle or always being in suspense, because your imagination fills in the plot holes or missing info. Writing to me is all about inspiration and what better inspiration, than what is around us. Look at everything that you take for granted, such as slogans, advertisements, and broadcasts to see if you can write it in a more clear or concise way. We all have certain phrases that we like to use over and over, so I always mull around in my brain, if there is a slight improvement to that opening that I favor or maybe I want to use someone else's favorite word and turn it into a new sentence. I think there are too many words that never get used in the dictionary, I hope someday we will start changing our language to become more uniformed.
